Aruban Artists Shine in New York’s Art Exhibition Caribbean Crossroads of the World

For the very first time, three very popular museums in New York are dedicating an exhibition to the Caribbean in which Aruba is participating. Aruba Minister Michelle Hooyboer-Winklaar visited the “Caribbean Crossroads of the World” exhibition during her recent stop in New York. There she met with several artists and personally congratulated them for their work. “Caribbean Crossroads of the World” as the exhibition is dubbed, opened on June 12 in all three museums of New York, namely, “El Museo del Barrio,” “Queens Museum of Art,” and “The Studio Museum of Harlem” in New York. It will close on January 6, 2013 in the first two museums.

The “Caribbean Crossroads of the World” exhibition at “The Studio Museum in Harlem will close on the October 21, 2012. This “Caribbean Crossroads of the World” particular exhibition has displayed more than 500 works of art over the past 400 years with an emphasis on the relationship between the Caribbean and the USA. They have placed a great deal of emphasis on regional contributions relative to identity and the sense of belonging. The Caribbean Crossroads of the World exhibition will also highlight ideologies, commerce, culture, politics and the popular cultures of the entire Caribbean to include the coastal region of the Caribbean such as Miami, Venezuela, Colombia, etc.

The Caribbean Crossroads of the World includes more than just the exhibition. It is accompanied by special events, educational programs and workshops for students. Because of the bright spotlight on the Caribbean Crossroads of the World exhibition there in New York, The New York Times, has become interested and have written an extensive and lovely article on the event.

Aruba is definitely very proud of the several Aruban artists participating along with 379 other artists in this exhibition. The Aruba Minister expressed her congratulations and pride for our Arubans making their name in art. She considers the Caribbean Crossroads of the World exhibition a real milestone. She reported having visited “El Museo del Barrio” two years ago, and she was pleased that our efforts to become part of this event have finally materialized.

Photos shows the Minister admiring works of art at Museo Del Barrio, along with visitors from Aruba and our local artists. We are proud to see how our local artists can excel in New York in such a prestigious Caribbean art exhibition.
